The city of Buea will be privileged to host the
infrastructure that will accommodate celebrities in and out of the town of
legendary hospitality. This comes as a result of a decision made by the proprietor
of Hotel Residence Carlos who is bent on creating a leisure zone for stars
only. This will be the first of its kind in Anglophone Cameroon, and has been
widely appraised by celebrities in and around Buea.
A short video advert was made which featured some stars
like: Agbor Gilbert (producer), Zita Aliah (actress), Elynn Fesse (actress) and
Tony Nobody (musician). The celebrities in Anglophone Cameroon will convey on
Friday 4th May at the hotel premises to discuss more on how the star
corner will function and maybe set some guide rules.
It should be noted that though this project will be
considered to some to be a solution to whatever situation in the entertainment
industry, there will be some discrepancies pertaining to the definition of the
word “CELEBRITY”. Who is a celebrity and how do we identify one? Is being
popular a criteria? Or are they chosen because of what they have attempted and
constructively achieved?
Also, does the creation of a celebrity zone mean those who
will be part of it are now certified celebs? Do we always have to try to create
celebrities or do we need to acknowledge celebrities? Left to me, we would have
paid more attention to the creation of meaningful projects, and other roadside
projects like this would come later, when we are sure that the industry has
been fortified. We need to create a foundation before we start erecting walls
to distinguish between celebrities and commoners.
My sincere hope is that this scheme should not bring about
inequality, but rather it should serve as a zone for meaningful communication,
one which will help to cement our names in the history of Anglophone entertainment
in Cameroon. As long as some people use this as a medium for segregation, we
will witness another fiasco of epic proportion, one which will leave us in
shame. I will personally be at the meeting on Friday, and I hope to bring back
some good news.
